ANNOUNCEMENTS AND REMINDERS

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009

CARD PARTY

A special word of gratitude to all who worked on the Card Party this year and for the countless hours spent on preparing for, and working on, this important tradition at Cathedral. The gym looked beautiful (as always) and the display of gifts and baskets were overwhelming. Thank you for any part “large or small” that helped make the Card Party a huge success. The number of students who also gave their time was greatly appreciated. On behalf of the Cathedral Prep family, I would like to thank the Parent Advisory Board and the Card Party committee for their faithful service for helping to keep the mission of Cathedral Prep alive and growing through this necessary fundraiser. May God bless you for your generosity.

MIDDLE STATES VISIT

For the past two years, Fr. Cush, the Middle States Internal Coordinator, Faculty, Students and Alumni of the Middle States Committee have been working diligently preparing for the Middle States Team Visit and Re-accreditation.  The “protocol” of self-study is entitled  Validating the Vision. Beginning Monday, October 19th to Thursday, October 22nd, the Middle States team visited Cathedral. It was a challenging yet affirming experience for us to have the team spend the week at Cathedral to observe our daily life and review our self-study. The members of the team were insightful, dedicated and respected educators and, by their own words, were "inspired" and also "impressed" by: the daily Masses and spiritual and social programs that are offered, interviews with the students, faculty, staff and Board Members, the academic regimen and the overall "spirit" of the school.

Therefore, Fr. Marano very happy to announce to you that, before the members of the team left, they "unanimously" recommended that we be given re-accreditation. A formal document will follow from the Middle States Association to confirm this honor.  Thank you, in a special way to Fr. Cush and all students, faculty and Alumni who gave so generously of their time and were so dedicated in the achievement of  this goal.

FIRST ANNUAL ALL SOULS DAY MASS

On Monday, November 2, 2009 we initiated our First Annual All Souls Day Mass at Cathedral. The Mass took place here at Cathedral Prep in our Chapel.

Many of our alumni and friends have inquired about Cathedral offering a memorial card either in memory of a loved one who has died or in honor of a person who is still living. In response to their request, we are offering a memorial card whereby your loved ones will be remembered or honored at the First Friday Masses and the Annual All Souls Day Mass.

If you wish to participate, now or in the future, please contact Jim Dilg at 718-592-6800 x137 or at alumni@cathedralprepseminary.com to request a memorial/donation card. The memorial card could be sent to the family of the person you want to remember or to the person you want to honor, and the donation card should be sent back to Cathedral. You may request as many memorial/donation cards as you would like.

ABSENT NOTES

If a student is absent from school on any day, his parent is to telephone the school, (718)592-6800, extension 605, concerning his absence, by 9:00 a.m.  After 9:00 a.m., the Attendance Officer will telephone the home of the student whose absence has not been explained, to guard against the possibility that an accident or other misfortune might remain unknown to the parent or the school. State law requires the student who has been absent, on the day of his return to school, must bring a note of explanation from a parent to the Attendance Officer.

FLU SEASON

Take precautions every day to stop germs from spreading

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue away after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
  • Stay away from people who are sick as much as you can.
  • If you get the flu, stay home from work or school. If you are sick, keep your distance from other people so you don't make them sick.
  • Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs often spread this way.

The above flu precautions should be taken seriously. If your son is sick, please keep him home. Otherwise, you will be called to come and pick him up from school. Students who are sick are never allowed to go home on their own. Your son can check for any missed work and homework at www.cathedralprepseminary.com  under the “Faculty” link.

Influenza vaccinations are available through the NYC Health Department. For more information, visit nyc.gov/flu or call 311.

Please feel free to send in boxes of tissues or alcohol-based hand cleaners with your son to his homeroom teacher. Anything that can be done to avoid spreading the flu and any other illness is worth the effort.

COLLEGE INFORMATION/FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

Cathedral Prep would like to extend a special invitation for you to attend our College Information/Financial Aid Night. As the parents of juniors and seniors, you are certainly pondering the college application process and the rising costs of college tuition. On Monday, December 14th at 7 PM arrangements have been made to host a meeting to discuss college applications and financial aid. Mr. O’Keefe will host the meeting in the Studio (next to the cafeteria).

The evening will include detailed instruction on how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The guest speaker will be a representative from the Financial Aid Office at St. Francis College. The representative will also be available for any questions you may have regarding the financial aid process. This is an extremely important meeting. I urge you to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.
